When a multi-national offshore drilling company reached out to Applied Ultrasonics, the original discussion focused on enhancing the durability and reliability of an offshore derrick structure using Applied Ultrasonics’ Esonix UIT process. After reviewing the derrick retrofit design, however, Applied Ultrasonics’ engineers noted that Esonix UIT, as a stand-alone application, would not provide optimal results.
Instead, Applied Ultrasonics engaged the customer with a comprehensive Engineering Services approach to improve the weldment design, and to provide a full weld procedure, which included application and quality control oversight of Esonix UIT. The customer agreed with Applied Ultrasonic’s Engineering Services approach.
Applied Ultrasonics dispatched a team of weld engineers and technicians to the job site to provide weld QA/QC oversight and application of the Esonix UIT process. The onsite weld engineers improved the original weld joint design and executed a welding procedure that incorporated Esonix UIT into the repair process.
The customer was pleased with the results achieved by Applied Ultrasonics. The derrick structure is more reliable due to greatly improved fatigue strength and fatigue life. The vessel is still in service today, and the customer is looking forward to many more years of service.
